Our History

Founded in 1963 by a group of parents who wanted Montessori education for their children.

Christopher Academy is proud to be the oldest Montessori preschool school in the state of New Jersey and now has two campuses in Westfield and Scotch Plains.

The Westfield school began with eight children in two sessions. As the demand for high-quality early childhood experiences grew, the building and program expanded, currently enrolling 105 children between its three preprimary classes and combined kindergarten/first grade class.

The Country-in-the-City

Our second campus is located on a spacious four acre campus in Scotch Plains. Established in 1960 as Active Acres, a traditional preschool, it combined a secluded country setting with the amenities of a booming suburban community. To respond to the growing reputation of its program, Christopher Academy expanded into the Active Acres facility in 1986. Building upon the close-knit community of the quaint nursery school, Christopher Academy grew to offer an unparalleled Montessori experience to the Scotch Plains area. The Scotch Plains location now serves 75 children from 2 through 7 years of age.

And Historic Cranford

Founded in 1973 with only 15 children, The Montessori School of Cranford ultimately grew to serve 76 children from three years old through first grade. To accomodate the growing number of students and unite the Westfield and Cranford communities, MSC merged with The Christopher Academy's Westfield facility in 1993.
